Photolytic modification of seasonal nitrate isotope cycles in East Antarctica

چکیده

Abstract. Nitrate in Antarctic snow has seasonal cycles nitrogen and oxygen isotopic ratios that reflect its sources atmospheric formation processes, as a result, nitrate archived ice should have great potential to record chemistry changes over thousands of years. However, sunlight strikes the surface results photolytic loss fractionation can completely obscure nitrate's original values. To gain insight into how photolysis overwrites cycles, we collected 244 samples along an 850 km transect East Antarctica during 2013–2014 CHICTABA traverse. The route's limited elevation change, consistent distance between coast high interior plateau, intermediate accumulation rates offered gentle environmental gradient ideal for studying competing pre- post-depositional influences on isotopes. We find isotopes are indeed notably modified by after deposition, drier sites more intense impacts. Still, imprint is present top 1–2 m snowpack likely preserved through archiving glacial at these sites. Despite this preservation, reconstructing past values from similar transitional regions will remain difficult challenge without having independent proxy correct changes. Nevertheless, function rate such if multiple years deposition aggregated remove application prove highly valuable own right.

New Seasonal Shift in In-Stream Diurnal Nitrate Cycles Identified by Mining High-Frequency Data.

The recent development of in-situ monitoring devices, such as UV-spectrometers, makes the study of short-term stream chemistry variation relevant, especially the study of diurnal cycles, which are not yet fully understood. Our study is based on high-frequency data from an agricultural catchment (Studienlandschaft Schwingbachtal, Germany). We propose a novel approach, i.e. the combination of clu...

Seasonal Variation of Nitrate Concentration and Its Direct Radiative Forcing over East Asia

This study investigated the seasonal variation of nitrate concentration and its radiative forcing over East Asia by using an online-coupled regional climate model. Comparison with a series of in-situ observations from Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) and China demonstrated a good skill of the model in reproducing the magnitude and seasonality of nitrate concentration acro...

Flow dynamics of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica

Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, i...

Seasonal changes of human circadian rhythms in Antarctica.

The human circadian rhythms in sleep, activity, plasma melatonin, and rectal temperature were explored under two conflicting time cues in Antarctica: an extreme photoperiod and a strict work schedule. The nine healthy male subjects stayed at the Antarctic zone (latitude 66.5-90° south) for 15 mo including a 13-mo wintering at the Dome station (latitude 77° south). Neither the phases nor the amo...
